Patna: Due to the raging nature of Ganga, Kosi and Gandak rivers in Bihar, the flood situation in the state has become extremely dire. The water of the rising rivers has engulfed everything from residential settlements to the National Highway. In the last 24 hours, 20 people have died tragically due to drowning in various flood affected areas. In view of the increasingly serious situation, the government has declared high alert in 12 districts situated on the banks of Ganga and teams of NDRF and SDRF have been deployed in relief work.

District wise death toll: Maximum 5 people lost their lives in Saran

Many families have been left in mourning due to incidents of drowning in flood waters. Of the 20 deaths reported so far, maximum 5 deaths have been recorded in Saran district. Four people, including an innocent girl, died due to drowning in Patna, 3 in Bhojpur, 2 each in Vaishali and Bhagalpur and 1 each in Begusarai, Purnia, Lakhisarai and Jamui. The situation remains very worrying in Punpun and Maner blocks of Patna.

Dam broke at two places in Saran, boats floated in Hajipur city

Due to the strong current, the process of breaking of embankments has started. Saran district (Saran District Dozens of villages have been submerged due to breach of ring dam of Mahi river in Dariyapur of Manjhi and ring dam of Daha river in Imadpur of Manjhi. Here, due to flood water entering many localities of Hajipur city of Vaishali, the roads have been completely closed and people have to resort to boats for transportation.

Administration on alert mode in 12 districts situated on the banks of Ganga

In view of the record rise in the water level of Ganga in Munger and Bhagalpur, high level monitoring is being maintained at the government level. District Magistrates of Buxar, Bhojpur, Patna, Vaishali, Saran, Begusarai, Samastipur, Khagaria, Munger, Lakhisarai, Bhagalpur and Katihar have been instructed to take special precautions. Population from low-lying and sensitive areas is being evacuated to safe places.

Destruction in Kosi-Seemanchal: Bridge washed away, truck fell into river and water gushed over NH-80

Rivers are flowing well above the danger mark in Kosi and Seemanchal districts. The water level of Ganga in Bhagalpur has reached near the historical record level of 2021, due to which the traffic on NH-80 near Akbarnagar (Bhavnathpur) has come to a standstill. On the other hand, the bridge built on Asiani Ghat in Amour block of Purnia collapsed due to the strong pressure of water, due to which a heavy truck laden with sand fell into the river.

Experts’ warning: Next 3 days extremely heavy for downstream areas

According to the Water Resources Department, after crossing the highest level of Ganga at Gandhi Ghat in Patna, the heavy pressure of water is now moving downstream. There may be further rise in water level at gauge stations of Hathidah, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Munger, Bhagalpur and Katihar in the next 1 to 3 days. Officials have been given strict instructions to patrol the embankments round the clock.

Punpun comes close to 1976 all-time record in Patna

The water level of Punpun river in Shripalpur of the capital Patna has reached 53.45 meters, which is very close to the all-time record of 53.91 meters of 1976. At the same time, in Danapur, Ganga has touched a new level of 52.63 meters, breaking the record of 52.61 meters of 2021.

Discharge of water from barrages: surge in Kosi increased, flow from Son decreased

The discharge from Indrapuri Barrage into Son river has come down to 2.01 lakh cusecs, due to which the coastal areas of Son are expected to get some relief. However, water discharge from Kosi’s Veerpur Barrage has crossed 1.81 lakh cusecs, further increasing the threat to Seemanchal areas of North Bihar. Whereas the flow of water from Valmikinagar Barrage of Gandak remains stable at 1.29 lakh cusecs.
