Inter have added a new name to their transfer shortlist. The club are following Fulham centre-back Calvin Bassey, who could become available on a free transfer in next summer’s window.

According to Italpress, Cristian Chivu’s side are interested in Bassey, with discussions between the defender and his current club Fulham having reached a key stage. The 26-year-old Nigeria international is out of contract with the London club, who are keen to retain him and also have an option to extend his deal by one more year. At the same time, the player is considering the proposals in front of him before deciding whether to renew his commitment to the Cottagers or let his contract run down and agree with his next club as early as January, which would allow the side signing him in July to land him for free.

Inter, therefore, believe there is a real opportunity and see the situation as a potentially major piece of business. Bassey has been on the Nerazzurri executives’ radar since last winter, with the club appreciating his physical power, his ability to play out from the back and his versatility. The Nigerian is capable of operating as a centre-back, a left-sided centre-back and also at left-back. Fulham signed him from Ajax in July 2023 for more than €20 million, and he has already featured three times in the new league season.

Born in Italy, in Aosta, the 1999-born defender is a key figure for the Super Eagles and also holds a British passport. He was born on 31 December in Valle d’Aosta to Nigerian parents and spent his early years in the regional capital of Aosta before moving to England with his family, also giving up his father’s surname. He developed through the youth system at Leicester before joining Rangers in Glasgow, later drawing interest from Ajax and Fulham while waiting for a move to another major club.
