Anti-migrant protesters in the UK mistakenly gathered outside a hotel hosting Pakistan's Under-19 cricket team after wrongly believing that a group of asylum seekers had been accommodated there.
The incident took place in Portsmouth, where the young Pakistani cricketers are currently touring England for a series against the England Under-19 team.
Protesters Gather Outside Portsmouth Hotel
The confusion reportedly began after images and information circulated suggesting that a group of foreign men had arrived at the hotel by coach. The protesters believed they were asylum seekers and gathered outside the Marriott hotel in Portsmouth.
However, it was later confirmed that the guests were members of Pakistan's Under-19 cricket team, who were staying at the hotel during their ongoing tour of England.
Local Councillor Clarifies Situation
Reform UK councillor George Madgwick reportedly intervened after learning about the gathering and sought clarification from hotel staff and members of the visiting team. After confirming that the group was Pakistan's Under-19 cricket squad and not asylum seekers, Madgwick informed the protesters. The crowd subsequently dispersed, with reports indicating that there was no direct confrontation with the young cricketers.
ECB Contacts Pakistan Cricket Board
The England and Wales Cricket Board has contacted the Pakistan Cricket Board following the incident to ensure the wellbeing and safety of the visiting players. Security arrangements for the remainder of the Pakistan Under-19 team's tour are also being reviewed.
Pakistan's Under-19 side is currently playing matches against England's Under-19 team, with further fixtures scheduled during the tour.
