Welcome to our coverage of Thursday's Champions League action. Strange as it may sound to say that aloud, there were a number of matches to make up for it. Stay with us through the final round of league-phase openers.

The evening began with two early fixtures as Roma made their long-awaited return to Europe's elite away at Fenerbahçe, while PSV hosted Shakhtar Donetsk. Later, Manchester United welcomed Sabah in their own much-anticipated return, while Bayern Munich faced last season's surprise package Bodø/Glimt.

KICK-OFF

We were underway in Istanbul and Eindhoven.

Neither of the two early matches had really sparked into life at first, but the main talking point in Türkiye was Roma coming up against Greenwood, who had been a summer target before joining Fenerbahçe. However, the former England international did not make the visitors pay for missing out on him, sending a speculative long-range effort well off target.

At last, the breakthrough arrived. Malen made an excellent run across the edge of the box before setting up Cristante, who took a touch and drilled the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of Ederson's net.

What a signing he has been for the Giallorossi, by the way.

Right on the stroke of half-time, there was also an opener in Eindhoven. Mendoza produced a truly special effort inside the box to put the visitors in front.

We were back under way in the early matches.

As it turned out, two Englishmen were troubling Roma tonight. Archie Brown found the equaliser for the hosts with a delicate chip over Svilar after Greenwood played him through.

Another equaliser followed. PSV drew level against Shakhtar with a sweeping finish from the middle of the box after being picked out by Obispo's cutback.

The pressure was on Manchester United ahead of their return to Europe's top table.

There was drama in Istanbul as the visitors seemed to have been handed a chance to retake their lead after Dybala was brought down by Aktürkoğlu, but VAR intervened and determined that the foul had taken place just outside the box.

CHANCE! Fenerbahçe 1-1 Roma

Another big moment saw Lukaku tee up Aydin for a shot inside the area, but Roma's resolute defending took the sting out of it, allowing Svilar to claw it away comfortably.

Michael Carrick spoke about Luke Shaw's absence from the Manchester United side this evening.

The teams were out across the grounds as we got set for kick-off in this evening's later Champions League fixtures.

And we were under way.

Slavia had a big chance in the opening minutes but wasted it, sparing Lens from falling into an early deficit.

Huge chance for Bayern.

A superb ball into the box was almost too good, as two different Bayern forwards went to turn it in, but crossed wires meant the ball was diverted over the bar.

It was a bright start from Como on their maiden Champions League journey, forcing RB Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt into a pair of early saves.

A couple of successive corners for Manchester United as they applied pressure on newcomers Sabah from Azerbaijan.

Double chance for Como.

The Italian side moved the ball smartly through midfield to launch a counter-attack, but the eventual effort from Anastasios Douvikas was saved.

GOAL FOR COMO!

Cesc Fabregas' side went ahead with their first Champions League goal in club history. A slick move down the right eventually reached Martin Baturina, who slotted home after slipping in the penalty area.

Chance for Manchester United as a superb Kobbie Mainoo ball over the top found Bruno Fernandes, but the United captain saw his cross cut out at the last moment.

It was a frustrating start for Bayern in Munich as they struggled to break down Bodø/Glimt.

GOAL FOR MANCHESTER UNITED!

Michael Carrick's side finally found the breakthrough against Sabah as a pinpoint Patrick Dorgu cross picked out Matheus Cunha, who stabbed home from point-blank range to open the scoring at Old Trafford.

GOAL RULED OUT FOR SLAVIA PRAHA!

The hosts thought they had taken the lead through Emmanuel Ayaosi, but the referee ruled it out because the Nigerian handled the ball before finishing.

Lens had been let off the hook.

Huge chance goes begging for Sabah.

Somehow, Sabah did not draw level at Old Trafford after Christian Nwachukwu was left completely unmarked at the back post, but the forward sent a scuffed header just wide from point-blank range.

RB Leipzig looked almost certain to equalise against Como when Andrija Maksimović curled a superb effort towards the top corner, but Como goalkeeper Jean Butez flew across his goal to produce a brilliant save.

ANOTHER GOAL FOR COMO!

The hosts were flying on their Champions League debut. A superb ball in behind sent Anastasios Douvikas through, and the striker finished with only the goalkeeper to beat. Como were two goals clear.

GOAL MANCHESTER UNITED!

The Red Devils were up and running in the Champions League this season as they doubled their lead over Azerbaijani side Sabah.

After Matheus Cunha opened the scoring, United captain Bruno Fernandes made it two with a fine finish from the centre of the penalty area.

ANOTHER MANCHESTER UNITED GOAL!

The home side wasted no time in moving three goals ahead, this time through Benjamin Šeško, who got his name on the scoresheet in the Champions League for the first time this season.

After a slow start, United were beginning to run away with it.

HALF-TIME ACROSS THE GROUNDS!

What an end to the half for Manchester United.

We were back under way for the final 45 minutes across the grounds in the Champions League this evening.

RED CARD FOR SLAVIA!

It was a nightmare cameo for Mikulas Konecny, who had only come on at the start of the second half. In fewer than five minutes, he was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

The hosts were down to 10 men for the remainder of the first half.

GOAL FOR BAYERN!

After a frustrating first half, Bayern opened the scoring within the first five minutes of the second period.

It was a superb story too, as Jamaal Musiala fired home the opener.

GOAL FOR SLAVIA AFTER THE RED CARD!

Who needs an 11th player? Slavia took the lead despite being down to 10 men, with Danijel Šturm producing a stunner to put the home side ahead.

GOAL FOR COMO!

The goals were flying in around the grounds by now, and Como moved three goals clear thanks to a superb Assane Diao strike from an acute angle.

GOAL FOR RB LEIPZIG, THEY PULL ONE BACK!

Could the German side make a contest of it again? A fantastic curling effort from the edge of the box reduced the deficit to two goals. Goalscorer Andrija Maksimović had gone close on multiple occasions tonight, and now he had his goal.

GOAL FOR BAYERN! KANE GETS ON THE SCORESHEET!

Bayern had their second, and who else but Harry Kane was on target? The Englishman tapped in at the back post to double the home side's lead and all but put the match to bed.

GOAL MANCHESTER UNITED!

United had their fourth, and it was a fortunate one. After an attempted backheel from Joshua Zirkzee, a lucky bounce presented the ball perfectly for Lisandro Martínez, and the Argentine tapped in.

GOAL FOR LENS!

The French side drew level against 10-man Slavia Praha, and it was former Slavia player Abdallah Sima who broke the hearts of his old supporters.

GOAL FOR BAYERN!

This time it was Alphonso Davies, who absolutely smashed the ball into the net from the edge of the box. Blink and you would have missed it.

We really had only one match still hanging in the balance as we moved into the final five minutes of normal time.

Lens were still pushing for a winner away to 10-man Slavia Praha. The question was whether they could find it.

ANOTHER STUNNER FOR BAYERN!

This time Michael Olise casually lashed the ball into the top corner from nearly 30 yards. It was an unbelievable strike, and Bayern were now four goals to the good.

GOAL FOR SLAVIA! UNBELIEVABLE SCENES!

It had looked as though Lens might find a winner in Prague, but 10-man Slavia stunned the French side with a go-ahead goal in the dying minutes.

It was Slavia hero Danijel Šturm with his second of the night.

MORE DRAMA IN PRAGUE, LENS PULL LEVEL ONCE AGAIN!

It was absolute chaos in Prague as Lens levelled again in stoppage time through club captain Florian Thauvin.

The French runners-up simply kept fighting.

This game just kept on giving. Lens completed the comeback with another stoppage-time goal to silence the home crowd.

Only five minutes earlier they had been behind, but now it looked like they would leave Prague with all three points.

Wow, oh wow.
