Chelsea have gone to the head of the line in the chase for Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal, while Manchester United are also interested, according to GiveMeSport.

The 19-year-old La Masia product has already earned his first cap for Spain and is widely seen as one of the leading prospects in the holding-midfield role. His route into the side at Camp Nou has become more difficult after Barcelona signed Rodri from Manchester City.

Bernal made an impressive start to the season, but the presence of the current Ballon d'Or holder has limited his game time and left his immediate future under Hansi Flick unclear.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly the driving force behind the move, with Bernal viewed as a deep-lying playmaker who fits his tactical vision. The club are looking for a replacement for Fernandez following his transfer to Manchester City.

United have been tracking Bernal for a while as they look to rebuild an ageing midfield, and they see him as a possible long-term anchorman. Chelsea are believed to be in the strongest position after making early contact with the player's representatives.

The battle for his signature is expected to heat up as January approaches, with Barcelona's financial situation still relevant despite indications of improvement. Although the club would rather retain homegrown players, La Liga salary regulations could compel a sale if a substantial offer is made.
