New Delhi: The 2026-27 season of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) got off to a sensational start as Matchday 1 delivered emphatic wins, record-breaking performances and several big clubs dominated in their respective games.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) smashed six goals past Slovan Bratislava to reach at the top of the table. Bayern Munich registered a 5-0 win against a stubborn Bodø/Glimt side. also showed their attacking muscle by scoring five past Feyenoord.
Liverpool had to dig deeper, but managed to secure a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid, while also made a stellar return to the competition, cruising to a 4-0 victory over Sabah. Manchester City started their campaign with a 2-0 victory away to Porto.
Real Madrid got the job done against Inter Milan, registering a 2-1 victory at the Bernabéu, while Arsenal also secured a tense 1-0 victory against Napoli. The Italian Debutants Como hammered RB Leipzig 4-1 in front of a rocking crowd at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. A total of 69 goals were scored in 18 Champions League matches on matchday 1.
Mbappe joins elite list
Kylian Mbappe continued his sensational form in the Champions League. The Real Madrid striker has equalled Raúl's record of 71 goals and moved into fifth place in the all-time scoring list of the elite club competition. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (140), Lionel Messi (129), Robert Lewandowski (109) and Karim Benzema (90) are ahead of Mbappe in the list.
Haaland draws level with Aguero
The Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has now scored 59 goals in 59 Champions League appearances, giving him the highest goals-per-game ratio in the competition's history among players with at least 20 appearances. He netted his 36th Champions League goal for Manchester City, drawing level with Sergio Agüero as the club's all-time leading scorer in the Champions League.
Yamal continues to break records
At just 19 years and 58 days, Lamine Yamal became the youngest player in club history to reach 100 goal contributions, overtaking Lionel Messi's previous record. The Barcelona star now has 101 for the club, including 54 goals and 47 assists.
He is also inching closer to Kylian Mbappé's record for Champions League goals by a teenager. Yamal has 12 goals and is just one behind Mbappé's 13. He has already broken Mbappé's teenage record for Champions League goal contributions, reaching 22.
