According to NHAI, this 1033 helpline, launched in 2018, is operational 24 hours a day. The new system will enable calls to be handled in various Indian languages using AI. However, the authority has clarified that human involvement will also be maintained in emergency situations where judgment and discretion are required. Currently the service covers more than 1.46 lakh kilometers of National Highways and receives around 15,000 calls per day.

Ambulance and crane will reach the scene immediately

After the new upgrade, the system will capture the caller’s location in real-time, so that emergency teams can reach the scene without delay. This AI based system will identify and immediately dispatch the most suitable ambulance, crane or National Highway Patrol vehicle nearby. Apart from this, passengers will also be provided with timely alerts and advice regarding accidents or other important incidents on the highway.

A new initiative of highway management

This helpline provides redressal to passengers for medical emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, toll plazas and FASTag issues. NHAI’s subsidiary company, Indian Highway Management Company Limited (IHMCL) has invited Expression of Interest (EOI) for the development, design, deployment, operation and maintenance of this next-generation 1033 helpline call centre.
