Chess Olympiad 2026 is being organized in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. This is the biggest team tournament of chess, in which this time more than a thousand players from about 200 countries will participate. The 46th edition of the tournament will start from September 15 and will continue till September 27. That means, a fair of chess players is going to be held in Samarkand for two weeks.
India is entering as the defending champion. Both the Indian Open and Women's teams became champions in 2024 and this time they have to defend their titles. The Indian men's team won the title in Budapest by securing 21 match points out of a possible 22. D Gukesh played an important role in the victory of the Indian team. He scored 9 points out of 10. Arjun Erigaysi also had a tremendous performance.
What are the big challenges for India?
This time India will face a tough challenge from America and host Uzbekistan team. The United States is the No. 1 seed in terms of ratings and has some of the best Grandmaster players like Wesley So and Fabiano Caruana, while Uzbekistan has big names like Nodirbek Abdusatorov and Javokhir Sindarov. America is considered a strong contender for the title. The young Uzbekistani team, which will win the Chess Olympiad in 2022, is now more experienced than before.
The Indian team is also strong. Gukesh has been struggling with his form after winning the Olympiad and World Championship, but there are players like R Praggnananda in the team, who can compensate. This is a big strength of India, because there is depth in the team.
What is the format of Chess Olympiad?
There will be a total of 11 rounds of competitions in the Chess Olympiad and each country can register a maximum of 5 players in a team. Only 4 will play in the match, while one player remains reserve. So there are 4 games in a team match. In this way, if there is a match between India and any other country, there will be a total of 4 matches on 4 boards.
Winning the match gives you 2 match points. In case of a 2-2 draw, both teams get 1-1 match point. At the same time, no point is given for losing. It is worth noting that the result of the Olympiad is not decided by the number of individual games won by a player, but every 4-board match has to be won.
Another special thing is that you do not get more points if you win a match 4-0. Be it a 4-0 win or a 2.5-1.5 win, both will get only 2 match points. This is the reason why sometimes the player on board number 4 becomes as important for the team as the star player on board number 1.
What will happen if teams have equal points?
If teams are tied on match points, tie-breaks decide the rankings. FIDE, the organization that runs chess in the world, sets tie-break rules for every Olympiad. In such a situation, the teams keep an eye not only on winning the match but also on the performance of the opposing teams during the tournament.
