Maruti Suzuki has crossed the 1 lakh units mark in combined exports to Japan of its three India-made models, the Jimny 5-door, the Franks and the E Vitara. This achievement has again highlighted India’s manufacturing potential and the country’s growing importance to the global market.

Entry of Indian cars in Japan

The first exports of francs to Japan began in August 2024. The Jimny 5-door followed in December 2024, while exports of the E Vitara began in September 2025. Interestingly, both the Jimny 5-door and E Vitara are manufactured exclusively in India. Therefore, the role of Indian factories becomes important for Suzuki’s home market like Japan.

Japan is the second largest export market

Japan has now become the second largest export market for Maruti Suzuki. This was the case in the financial year 2025-26 and continued in the period from April to August in the financial year 2026-27. During this period, Suzuki Motor Corporation remained the number one automobile importer in Japan. In FY 2025-26, nearly 100 percent of Suzuki’s imports into Japan were manufactured by Maruti Suzuki.

Maruti Suzuki’s total export network now reaches nearly 120 countries. The company retained its top position among passenger vehicle exporters in India from FY 2021-22 to 2025-26. Between April and August 2026-27, the company has shipped more than 1.8 lakh vehicles abroad.

This success has also given new importance to India-Japan automobile relations. The cars produced by Suzuki’s manufacturing investment in India are now directly arriving in Japan. Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki accounts for more than 50 percent of India’s passenger vehicle exports.

The addition of the Franks, Jimny and E Vitara to the Japanese portfolio is significant as these models give Indian production centers a greater presence in Suzuki’s global supply chain. According to the company, these exports reflect the international market’s recognition of India’s automotive manufacturing quality, technology and manufacturing capabilities. The growing presence of Indian-made cars in Japan could also be important for future export expansion.
