Peacock just pulled the plug on one of its most buzzworthy crime dramas before the show could find its footing. The streamer canceled the Miami-set thriller after a single season despite its strong debut and network support.

M.I.A. gets canceled at Peacock

Peacock has axed the Miami-based crime drama M.I.A. after just one season, Deadline reported. Bill Dubuque created, wrote, and executive produced the series for the streaming platform. The show debuted on May 7 with all nine hour-long episodes dropping at once.

The series drew considerable attention right after its premiere on the streamer. Additionally, NBC boosted the show by airing a special broadcast on May 14. Notably, M.I.A. stood out as one of the rare shows both set and filmed in Miami. However, the specific reasons behind the cancellation remain undisclosed.

The story follows Etta Tiger Jonze, portrayed by Shannon Gisela, whose family runs drugs. When threats target the family operation, she suddenly navigates an unexpected life. Consequently, she relies on her intelligence to survive within Miami’s dangerous criminal underworld.

The ensemble cast featured Cary Elwes, Danay Garcia, Brittany Adebumola, and Dylan Jackson. Meanwhile, Alberto Guerra, Maurice Compte, Gerardo Celasco, and Marta Milans also starred in the show. Furthermore, Karen Campbell worked as showrunner, penned episode 102, and served as executive producer.

Alethea Jones directed the opening two episodes and executive produced alongside the team. Similarly, Gwyneth Horder-Payton directed episode 103, while Marizee Almas handled episodes 104 and 105. In addition, Ben Semanoff took charge of episodes 106 and 107 for the series.

John Dahl then closed out the season by directing episodes 108 and 109. MRC backed the project as the producing studio behind the show. Paramount Global Content Distribution managed distribution rights for the crime drama series. The cancellation ultimately adds M.I.A. to a growing list of one-season streaming originals. Dubuque is best known for creating the hit Netflix series Ozark.
