Confirming that John Konchar is among the free agents the Knicks are considering, Marc Stein of The Stein Line (Substack link) reports that the veteran wing has also received interest from at least three other Eastern Conference teams. According to Stein, the Heat, Magicand Raptors also have an eye on Konchar.

A seven-year veteran who has spent most of his career in Memphis, Konchar was traded to Utah in last season’s Jaren Jackson Jr. blockbuster, then was flipped to Minnesota last month along with Cody Williams before being waived by the Timberwolves.

Konchar has never averaged more than 5.1 points per game in a season, but he was a rotation regular and a jack-of-all-trades contributor during his time with the Grizzlies. The 6’5″ swingman rebounds well for his position, can handle the ball a little, and is capable of defending multiple positions. He can also knock down the occasional three-pointer, with a career rate of 34.9% from beyond the arc.

Although it bodes well for Konchar that he has at least four potential suitors, each of those clubs is operating over the luxury tax line, and Toronto doesn’t have enough room below its first-apron hard cap to sign a free agent to a minimum-salary contract.

New York has 13 players on standard contracts but is considered more likely to target a big man than a wing for its 14th spot. Miami and Orlando have 14 players on standard deals and aren’t under any obligation to carry full 15-man rosters into the regular season.

Konchar’s full $6.17MM salary for the 2026/27 season was guaranteed and will be paid out by Minnesota, so he can afford to be patient if a favorable NBA opportunity doesn’t arise within the next couple weeks. It’s possible there will be teams more motivated to target him for depth purposes in the event that certain players underperform or suffer injuries during the preseason.
