Michael Carrick urging Man United to sign prolific striker who has lit up the Bundesliga this season

Manchester United’s backline has come in for plenty of criticism so far this season, but the forward line has also not produced when it has mattered.

The Red Devils failed to score against newly promoted Hull City in their Premier League opener, and they were also unable to net against 10-man Manchester City in the controversial derby defeat.

Michael Carrick’s call to continue with Matheus Cunha as a false nine is yet to pay off, as the head coach carefully brings Benjamin Sesko back after a long spell out through injury.

The Slovenian already has two goals, but he requires greater support, especially with Joshua Zirkzee not particularly known for being a prolific scorer.

The Dutch forward came close to departing on deadline day, but the transfer did not go through. He is now expected to leave when the next transfer window opens.

According to Fussball News, Carrick is pressing INEOS to bring in another clinical centre-forward, with Igor Matanovic emerging as his preferred choice.

The SC Freiburg striker has already scored six goals in six matches this season and has also provided three assists. Across all competitions last season, the 23-year-old registered 15 goals.

Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the Croatian striker, while Freiburg have put a £34 million asking price on him.

“Igor Matanovic’s displays for SC Freiburg have drawn interest from Premier League clubs. According to information from fussball-news.de, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are seriously weighing up a move for the 23-year-old centre-forward.

“Manchester United in particular are showing strong interest in the Freiburg player. The Red Devils are searching for a physically strong centre-forward who offers a real presence inside the penalty area and can also serve as a passing outlet.

“According to information from fussball-news.de, the Croatian’s profile is also viewed favourably internally by United manager Michael Carrick. Scouts from the English record champions are believed to be assessing Matanovic as a serious option for the centre-forward role.”

It has already been reported that INEOS’ priority next summer will be to rebuild the defence. Whether they will be able to afford a move for Igor Matanovic remains unclear.

If the 20-time English league champions move on both Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford, space in the squad is likely to open up.

United’s interest in the player has been backed up by multiple outlets. INEOS are likely to strengthen in defence next summer. The co-owners prefer Premier League-proven players.
