WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted which keeps its users safe but the messaging app has warned that it will stop its services in India if it is forced to break chat encryption in the near future. WhatsApp reported this to the Delhi High Court this week, where it is facing a major battle to keep its users safe behind its vaunted end-to-end encryption for chats, calls, videos and more.
The Meta-owned platform has hired Tejas Kariya, who shared the company's view on breaking encryption and threatening to exit the country rather than follow the law on the matter. He also mentioned that millions of people use WhatsApp because they feel secure with the features offered by the platform. The messaging app is claimed to have around 400 million active users in the country where you also have UPI payment facility. The last thing Meta and WhatsApp wants to do is shut down its messaging service in the country and it will quietly hope that such warnings will help its case and not be forced to crack its encryption for messages.
WhatsApp vs Govt of India on your privacy
The Indian government has repeatedly claimed that WhatsApp and other messaging apps need to allow them to trace messages under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Ethics) Rules 2021, which is not possible when chats are protected behind encryption and have keys. Not accessible to anyone including WhatsApp.
The meta-proprietary platform is challenging its case against the IT rules, arguing that breaking encryption violates users' privacy under the Indian Constitution. The government feels that the right to privacy is not absolute and wants to strike a balance, including breaking encryption for chat.
WhatsApp has faced similar demands in other countries but continues to adhere to its policies and beliefs that messages in all forms should and will remain secure for a long time. After all, security is one of the biggest reasons WhatsApp became so popular and got Meta to buy it for over $15 billion a decade ago.
