A new beta version is now available with an improved tool to transfer chats from one phone to another without involving Google Drive, making it easier when you need to transfer your WhatsApp account from an old phone to a new one.

According to WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned chat app is finally rolling out Google Drive for chat transfers. While backing up your chats to Google Drive will be an option, transferring chat history when switching phones will be a new option using QR codes. WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.49.9.19 has a new QR code-based chat transfer tool where you can point the camera of the old phone and start the chat transfer without taking up any space on Google Drive.

No Google Drive

You can completely stop backing up your data to Google Drive and save space. Google Drive had previously announced that all WhatsApp backups will count towards the space allocated to the user. If you want to transfer chats between two Android phones, Google Drive was essential before WhatsApp streamlined the process with its new chat transfer tool. However, the new method is a bit complicated compared to backing up chat history from the old phone to Google Drive and restoring the chats to the new phone. It also requires a cable to work properly.

The upcoming tool should avoid all the awkward steps of transferring chats between two Android devices with ease. It is currently available only in beta, and there is no information about when the general public will get it.

iOS users already have it

Android users already have a few tools to transfer chats, and an upcoming QR code-based tool will make the process easier, while iPhone users have had it for some time. In addition to using iCloud to migrate chats between two iPhones, users can scan a QR code on the old iPhone from their new device to bring over the chats.
