A feature tracker claims that WhatsApp is testing a new feature that allows users to translate messages into other languages. The live translation feature is intended to work through on-device processing and may use Google’s live translation technology. This was reported in the beta version of the WhatsApp Android app. This development comes after the discovery of another feature in the beta version of WhatsApp that allows live transcription of voice messages.

Live translation of messages on WhatsApp

According to WABetaInfo Feature Tracker, the live news translation feature works on the device, meaning the data is stored locally instead of being sent to a cloud server. This may allow users to translate messages on instant messaging platforms. This feature was reported in WhatsApp for Android application version 2.24.15.8.

Users may need to download a language pack to access this feature. Initially it will be limited to English and Hindi, but more languages will be supported in the future. Feature trackers speculate that translations in chats could happen automatically. This means that users do not have to leave the application to receive the SMS translation.

The feature tracker claims that the live transcription option is still under development and therefore not available even to beta testers. Therefore, those using the latest version of WhatsApp on Android Beta through the Google Play Beta program may not be able to access it. Gadget 360 officials could not confirm the availability of the Android beta app on WhatsApp.

Transcription of voice messages

In addition to live translation of messages, WhatsApp for Android is reportedly developing direct transcription of voice messages. It may allow users to send and receive transcribed voice messages. According to the claims, a new banner could appear below the audio transcription asking users if they would like to receive a transcription of the audio message.

The feature was discovered in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android version 2.24.15.5 and is reportedly available to beta testers of the app.
