Meta-owned messaging application WhatsApp regularly makes headlines for testing and developing new features on platforms like smartphones and PC. According to WABetaInfo, to improve the chatting experience on the web, the company is now testing a feature that allows people to create a username and connect with others without sharing their phone number.
This feature is currently in the development phase and may be released for users in an upcoming update. The unique username feature is currently not being rolled out to beta testers. Apart from an additional layer of privacy, it will help in personalizing the profile while connecting with contacts and other users without the hassle of sharing the number for added convenience.
Only users who know your username can be allowed to connect with you. Although users can create a username with a unique identification, users who know your phone number can connect with you as usual.
This will allow for the protection of personal information. However, WABetaInfo noted that since the feature is in development, it is not possible to provide details about the release timeline or the availability of the feature in upcoming versions.
