Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and his live-in partner Pavithra Gowda are at the center of a high-profile murder case that has gripped Karnataka. Pavithra, alongside Darshan and 16 others, has been accused of orchestrating the brutal killing of Renukaswamy, a fan who allegedly harassed Pavithra with obscene messages on social media. The chilling details were revealed in a chargesheet filed by the Bengaluru police, shedding light on a violent confrontation fueled by jealousy, betrayal, and revenge.
How Did Darshan and Pavithra's Relationship start?
In her police statement, Pavithra Gowda detailed her relationship with Darshan, which began in 2014 when she auditioned for the film Bull Bull. Initially unaware of his marital status, Pavithra claimed that their relationship blossomed over the years. She explained how they grew close through phone conversations and later moved in together in 2018.
"In 2014, when I auditioned for 'Bull Bull,' I shared my modeling profile with Darshan and got his mobile number from a known manager. When I contacted Darshan about the audition, it had already been completed. He said he would let me know if there were any opportunities for other films. Using this as a pretext, we began talking on the phone, chatting on WhatsApp, and calling each other every day," she said.
Regarding Renukaswamy's murder, Pavithra stated, "A person from the Instagram account 'KS Gautham 1990' was sending me many obscene messages, photos, and videos. I did not complain about this. Later, I discussed with Pavan about finding the person sending these messages. For that, Pavan asked Darshan's fans to locate him in Chitradurga."
Darshan’s Violent Retaliation
On June 8, 2024, Darshan allegedly instructed a group of men to track down Renukaswamy and bring him to a shed in Pattanagere. In a call to Pavithra, Darshan reportedly said, "Let’s teach him a lesson," inviting her to join the confrontation. When Pavithra arrived, she found Renukaswamy being brutally assaulted by Darshan and his associates, including Pavan, Nagaraj, and Nandeesh. In her statement to the police, Pavithra admitted, "I hit him on the face and forehead with my slipper. I instructed those present not to let him go and to kill him."
The violence escalated as Darshan kicked Renukaswamy in the stomach, chest, and head. According to the chargesheet, Darshan then ordered Pavan to remove Renukaswamy’s pants and delivered a final blow to his groin, inflicting fatal injuries. Renukaswamy’s body was later discovered near Sumanahalli Bridge in Bengaluru, with post-mortem reports revealing multiple blunt injuries, including a missing ear and ruptured testicles. The report concluded that Renukaswamy died from shock and hemorrhage due to the severe assault.
The case has garnered widespread media attention, not only for its brutal nature but also because of the prominent individuals involved. Pavithra, a well-known figure in the Kannada film industry, had been in a relationship with Darshan since 2014. In her statement, Pavithra revealed that they moved in together in 2018, despite knowing Darshan was still married to his wife, Vijayalakshmi.
Tensions Between Pavithra and Darshan
Tensions between Pavithra and Darshan reportedly reached a boiling point in May 2024, when Darshan traveled to Dubai with Vijayalakshmi to celebrate their wedding anniversary without informing Pavithra. "Darshan went to Dubai on May 19 with Vijayalakshmi. Since then, I stopped talking to him," Pavithra confessed to the police. The hurt and anger from this incident, coupled with the ongoing harassment from Renukaswamy, allegedly pushed Pavithra to encourage Darshan and his associates to kill the man behind the messages.
The chargesheet paints a disturbing picture of a premeditated crime. It suggests that Darshan, enraged by the harassment directed at Pavithra, took matters into his own hands and ordered the kidnapping and murder of Renukaswamy. "I instructed those present not to let him go and to kill him," Pavithra admitted during the investigation. Following the brutal attack, Darshan called Pavithra later that evening to inform her that Renukaswamy had died. "At around 9.30 pm, Darshan and Pavan called me to inform that Renukaswamy had died," she stated.
The legal proceedings against Darshan, Pavithra, and their co-accused are expected to be long and complex. If found guilty, they face severe consequences, including charges of kidnapping, assault, and murder. The case has not only shocked the Kannada film industry but also serves as a grim reminder of how online harassment and personal conflicts can lead to devastating real-world violence.
