Indore: A 30-year-old man allegedly chained for nearly seven years was rescued from the Khajrana area of Indore on Friday by a local NGO, ‘Sanstha Pravesh.’ The victim, identified as Zaid, had been kept in chains by his mother near the Khajrana police station, allegedly due to his mental health issues.
The rescue operation, led by Rupali Jain, proved challenging as Zaid’s mother, Mumtaz, suffered a panic attack and became violent, making it difficult for the team and police to calm her. Despite her resistance, the rescue team managed to retrieve the keys to the chains. However, the locks were rusted and unusable, forcing the team to break the chains with a hammer and chisel. After nearly two hours, Zaid was freed and taken to a mental hospital for treatment, according to the Times of India report.
"The 30-year-old man was mentally unsound and was kept chained by his mother, a beggar. She occasionally fed him," Jain said.
Zaid had been confined to a 5-square-foot area, where he ate, slept, and defecated under an open sky, covered only by a plastic sheet. Clad in just a towel, he endured harsh weather conditions. Local vendors revealed that Zaid often screamed in hunger or remained silent. Moved by his condition, passersby and locals occasionally gave him food and water.
Zaid’s wrists and legs were found chained together, with the ends secured to the ground with iron rods. Residents said Zaid had been mentally unstable for years, often throwing stones at people and verbally abusing women.
Zaid’s aunt, Gulnaz Bee, claimed that his mental health deteriorated after he suffered a head injury at the age of nine. Financial struggles further worsened his condition. Despite his talent as a singer and aspirations for a better life, Zaid’s situation spiralled downward after his father abandoned the family 15 years ago.
Zaid’s sister, Sara, revealed that their mother, afraid to seek medical treatment, relied on traditional healing methods, which failed to improve his condition.
Jain confirmed that Zaid has been admitted to a mental health facility in Banganga for treatment.
