Cybercrime cases are increasing day by day. Now hackers are targeting people using social media and messaging apps. The latest case is to WhatsApp scam, where after downloading a simple image, Rs 2.01 lakh disappeared from a person's account.
How did this fraud?
The victim Pradeep Jain received a call from an unknown number. After a while, he was sent a picture of an elderly person on Whatsapp from the same number and the question was asked, “Do you know this person?”
Initially Pradeep ignored it, but after continuous calls, he downloaded the image at around 1:35 pm. Soon after, hackers got access to their phone. Within a few minutes, 2.01 lakh rupees came out of his bank account.
When the call came to confirm the transaction from the bank, the hackers copied the victim's voice, which did not suspect anyone.
What is Stegonography technique?
To carry out this scam, hackers used the technique called Steganography. In this, the dangerous code is hidden in the image or audio file, which the malware is activated in the phone as soon as the user is downloaded.
According to Tushar Sharma, a cyber expert and co-founder of Tofe (The Organization for Enlightenment and Education), it is not a new technology.
In 2017 also, hackers had sent malicious codes through GIF files on WhatsApp, which used to access the phone system as soon as they downloaded. However, at that time WhatsApp had cured this disturbance.
