France are finalising their preparations for the upcoming World Cup, aware that they will once again shoulder immense expectations heading into this summer’s tournament.

Didier Deschamps has assembled yet another talent-filled squad for the campaign in North America, particularly in attack, where he can rely on one of the most formidable forward lines in international football.

The offensive unit is spearheaded by captain Kylian Mbappe, with Ousmane Dembele also entering the competition as the reigning Ballon d’Or winner. The question remains whether this gives Deschamps a selection dilemma or an enviable luxury.

Olivier Giroud, who earned 137 international caps and became France’s all-time top scorer, believes that the nation’s attacking pair are capable of delivering brilliance on football’s grandest stage.

“People often mention the challenge of having multiple star players in one team and whether they can coexist, but honestly, it’s a wonderful situation for a national side to have,” Giroud said in an interview with FourFourTwo.

He added, “It’s also worth noting that Ousmane and Kylian share a very close bond – they’re like brothers and both are terrific personalities.”

Having represented France for 14 years and participated in seven major tournaments, Giroud has experienced first-hand the importance of squad depth, and he sees something exceptional in the current Les Bleus setup.

“The number of strikers we have and the quality of talent in that dressing room is outstanding,” he continued. “The attacking firepower that France possesses is truly special.”

Giroud emphasised that rather than being competitors, Mbappe and Dembele will complement each other effectively throughout the tournament. “They’re both capable of leading the side this summer, and if we reach the performance level I know we can, while defending solidly, there’s no reason we can’t go the distance with players like them.”

This World Cup will mark the first since 2010 that Giroud will experience from the sidelines, but he admits he is excited to watch his former teammates in action.

“I’m really looking forward to watching Kylian and the entire French squad this summer,” he said with a smile. “He’s the kind of player you encounter only once in a career. He’s an extraordinary person, and I hope to see him lifting that trophy again.”
