Several prominent trade unions, along with farmer and rural labour organizations, have jointly called for a nationwide strike or Bharat Bandh on July 9, 2025. The call to action is aimed at opposing what they describe as government policies that favour corporations at the expense of workers and farmers.

Organisers of the protest claim that the response will be massive, with participation expected from both formal and informal sectors across the country.

“All India Trade Union Congress’s Amarjeet Kaur said, ‘More than 25 crore workers are expected to take part in the strike. Farmers and rural workers will also join the protest across the country,’” reported the Times of India.

Adding to this, Harbhajan Singh Sidhu of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha noted, “Banking, postal, coal mining, factories, state transport services will be affected due to the strike.”

The organizers assert that the strike is a coordinated response to rising privatization, weakening labour protections, and the marginalization of the agricultural sector.

Banking Services Expected To Function On July 9, 2025

Despite the scale of the planned protest, banks are expected to remain open on July 9, unless the day is declared a holiday in the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) official calendar. The RBI classifies holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, with variations across states.

Customers are advised to consult the RBI’s state-specific holiday list to confirm closures.

Banks across the country will continue to follow the standard schedule, remaining closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, in addition to regional public holidays.

Key Regional Bank Holidays In July 2025

  • July 16: Uttarakhand banks will remain shut for the Harela festival.

Other upcoming holidays in July include observances for Kharchi Puja, Guru Hargobind Ji’s Birthday, and Death Anniversary of U Tirot Singh, depending on the state.
