Apple is now imagining a future where humans will be able to operate devices like iPhones only through their thoughts. According to a report in a reputed American newspaper, this revolutionary technology is similar to Elon Musk's Neuralink. In this, the device will be controlled through an implant in the human brain. Apple is working in this direction in collaboration with New York-based brain-interface tech company Synchron.
What is this device?
The Synchron company is working on a special device called Stentrode. This device is installed in the veins near the brain like a stent and reads the signals generated from the brain and converts them into digital commands. With this, users can control mobile phones, computers, etc., without using their hands. This technology can prove to be especially useful for those who suffer from diseases like severe spinal cord injury, ALS, or stroke and are physically disabled.
How does this system work?
This advanced technology is called a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). When a person thinks about something, their brain produces electrical signals. BCI captures these signals with the help of sensors and converts them into digital commands. This allows users to type, open apps, or control the cursor without touching the screen.
Synchron's Stentrode integrates with Apple's Switch Control feature. This feature gives users the freedom to operate the device in different ways. According to Synchron CEO Tom Oxley, until now, companies had to give the computer the illusion that the signals received from the brain are from an input device such as a mouse. But Apple's new standard, which may be launched this year, will be able to connect devices directly to brain implants.
A user's real story
A man named Mark Jackson, who is suffering from ALS, is already using Synchron's device. He can control Apple's Vision Pro headset and iPhone with his mind. Despite being unable to walk, he told WSJ that when he was taking a virtual tour of the Swiss Alps, he felt as if he was actually standing on the edge of the mountain and his legs started trembling.
Competition with Neuralink
Elon Musk's company Neuralink has already conducted human trials of its brain-implant device N1. Neuralink's system is more technically advanced than Synchron. While Synchron's device has 16 electrodes, Neuralink uses more than 1,000 electrodes. Musk believes that this technology can increase the power of the human brain so much that it reaches the level of superintelligence.
Picture of the future
According to a report by Morgan Stanley, about 1.5 lakh people in America whose upper limbs do not work can be the initial users of this technology. The report also estimates that this technology can be commercially available by the year 2030. However, the CEO of Synchron believes that this availability is possible even before this. This technology can not only change the world of technology but can also give a new perspective to the lives of millions of people.
