WhatsApp has once again taken a big action and banned the accounts of 98 lakh Indian users. Meta has announced this in its June compliance report. The instant messaging platform has taken this action on these WhatsApp accounts due to misuse and spreading rumors etc. Earlier, WhatsApp had banned the accounts of lakhs of users in India.
More than 16 ban requests
WhatsApp received more than 16 thousand requests to ban accounts in June. In the month of June, the company has taken action on these accounts and banned 16,069 accounts from the platform. Out of the banned accounts, 19.79 lakh accounts have been banned which have been reported by the users. Meta has taken action on WhatsApp accounts under the guidelines of Digital Media Ethics Code, 2021.
According to the compliance report, WhatsApp received an overall 23,596 requests in the month of June. Out of this, the company has taken action on 1,001 accounts. WhatsApp has taken action on 756 accounts with ban requests. All other complaints were about account assistance, product related queries and safety queries etc.
Works on a three stage system
WhatsApp said that the company already detects all types of objectionable activity and content on its platform. The company has created an abuse detection system for this, which works on three main stages. It includes account setup, messaging and reaction or negative feedback.
All social media platforms including Meta, which have 50 thousand or more active users, have to issue a monthly compliance report every month. In this report, companies have to issue a detailed report of the action taken on the users' accounts and the requests received. If a social media company takes any action on a user's account intentionally, then they can go to the appellate committee. However, it rarely happens that a user's account is intentionally banned by a social media platform.
