ITR Tips: Why is there a delay in ITR refund? Have you also made these mistakes?

Filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) is an important process for taxpayers. The refund received from this is good news for the taxpayers, but if the refund does not come into the account even after waiting for a long time, then the concern increases.

Many people face the problem of not getting a refund after filing their income tax return. In such a situation, if you have filed ITR on time for the assessment year 2025-26 and the refund has not come yet, then there may be some common but important reasons behind it.

Lack of e-verification
Filing ITR is not enough; unless you e-verify your return, the Income Tax Department does not take any action on it. Without e-verification, the refund process does not start at all.

Error in linking Aadhaar and PAN
The Income Tax Department has made it mandatory to link the PAN card with the Aadhaar to file ITR. If there is any mismatch in your documents, such as a different spelling of the name or a difference in date of birth, then the linking will not be completed. Not only this, if you have not completed the linking process, then the refund process will not be able to start at all. Therefore, first of all, check whether PAN and Aadhaar are linked correctly.

Discrepancy in documents
If the figures given in your Form 26AS, Form 16, and Annual Information Statement (AIS) do not match, then this can also be a reason. For example, if your TDS entry is visible in Form 26AS but you have not included it in ITR, then the department can ask for clarification from you and stop the refund process.

Withholding due to false claims or incomplete information
Many times, taxpayers claim some deductions or exemptions to save tax, for which they do not have sufficient documents. In such cases, the Income Tax Department can hold the return for investigation. Especially if you have claimed a refund of a large amount, the department does carry out additional investigation. If the information is not found to be correct, the refund may be delayed or even rejected.

Error in bank account information
While filing ITR, your bank account is the medium through which the refund is sent. But if you have filled in the wrong account number or IFSC code, or your bank account is not verified on the income tax portal, the refund may get delayed. Keep in mind that only that bank account is valid which is already verified and is in your name.
