Speaking for the first time about her marriage and children in a video aired on tvN on Tuesday, Kim shared their love story. When asked, “When did you think about marrying Rain?”, she reflected on their journey together before tying the knot.
The stars first met in 2012. Rain then admitted he was drawn to Kim at first sight. After obtaining her phone number, he called to invite her out for a meal, but she declined, saying, “There’s no reason for us to go eat together.” Kim even told Rain directly that he was not her type.
Being rejected sparked Rain’s competitive spirit. “What’s going on? I’m a decent guy, not that bad,” he recalled thinking at the time. Soon after, Rain began his mandatory military service. A year later, during a leave, he texted Kim and successfully invited her to dinner.
During their courtship, Rain confessed his feelings multiple times but was initially turned down. Kim, who is two years his senior, worried that he might be flirtatious.
However, Rain’s honesty and sincerity eventually won her over. Kim recalled that in the early days of their relationship, Rain would give her small gifts “without making anyone feel burdened.” Whenever she felt tired or down, these gestures made her smile, encouraging her to develop a closer bond with him.
The couple married in 2017 and now share two daughters, aged eight and six. Kim revealed that their children resemble both parents.
“Our older daughter has the top half of her face like me and the bottom half like him, while the youngest is the opposite,” she said. “It’s both funny and touching.”
Since marriage, Kim has limited her work to focus on the family, appearing in only four projects over the past eight years. Rain, meanwhile, has continued an active career in music and television. This year, Kim drew attention for starring in the U.S.-produced TV drama “Butterfly,” which premiered on August 22.
According to tvNthe couple is among the wealthiest in South Korea’s entertainment industry. In 2021, Rain purchased a building worth 92 billion won (US$65.8 million) in Seoul, while the couple lives in a villa valued at around 5 billion won.
At 45, Kim is considered one of South Korea’s most beautiful actresses, known for her roles in “Stairway to Heaven,” “Love Story in Harvard,” “Iris,” “Yong-pal,” and “Hi Bye, Mama!.”
Rain, born Jung Ji Hoon, 43, debuted in 1998 and gained international recognition in 2003 with the TV series “Full House,” starring alongside Song Hye Kyo. He was named twice to Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world, in 2006 and 2011.
