Rescue Operation in Keonjhar District

Bhubaneswar: In a distressing event in Odisha's Keonjhar district, an eight-year-old girl was rescued after being trapped overnight in a government school, according to police reports.

The incident occurred at the Government Upper Primary School located in Anjar, within the Banspal block. The girl, identified as Jyotsna Dehuri, was reportedly left locked inside her classroom while she slept on a bench, as explained by one of her teachers, Sanjita Das.

Her family reported that she did not return home from school on Thursday, prompting them to search throughout the night. Early the next morning, they, along with local villagers, discovered her in distress, with her head caught in the window grill.

"The villagers managed to bend the iron grill to free her. She was then taken to a nearby hospital where her condition was reported as stable after receiving treatment," stated Sita Patra, the school cook.

The girl had been locked in the classroom overnight, and her head became trapped while she attempted to escape.

In response to this alarming incident, the district administration has suspended the headmaster, Gourahari Mahanta, for negligence.

Following the orders of Keonjhar Collector Vishal Singh, the Banspal Block Education Officer has initiated an investigation into the matter.

A video showing the girl’s predicament circulated widely, leading to public outrage across the state. The School and Mass Education Department has confirmed that the child is safe and on the mend.

An initial inquiry by the District Education Officer revealed that some Class VIII students were instructed to lock the school at 4 PM.
