In the late 1990s and early 2000s one name often lit up theatre screens Rambha. Born Yeedi Vijayalakshmi she became one of the most sought-after heroines across Telugu Tamil Malayalam and Hindi cinema. Before the idea of a ‘pan-Indian’ star existed Rambha had already lived it. She acted with top names like Salman Khan Rajinikanth Mammootty and Chiranjeevi creating on-screen pairs that fans still recall with nostalgia. How did Rambha begin her journey? Her entry was nothing short of cinematic fate. Rambha’s first appearance came in 1992 with Sargam a Malayalam musical directed by Hariharan. She played Thankamani a village girl whose love for music mirrored her innocence. Though she did not know the language then her performance was praised for its natural charm. The film went on to become the third-highest grosser of the year and even won a National Award. Overnight a star was born. It was her Telugu debut Aa Okkati Adakku opposite Rajendra Prasad that gave her the screen name Rambha one she carried through her career. Which films defined her stardom? Once her career took off there was no looking back. Rambha found herself cast alongside legends Rajinikanth in Arunachalam Chiranjeevi in multiple hits Mammootty in Hitler and Thalapathy Vijay in Ninaithen Vandhai. By 1996 the song Azhagiya Laila from Ullathai Allitha turned her into a household name. From comedy to family dramas her filmography stacked up titles like Kaathala Kaathala Chronic Bachelor Rowdy Annayya Muddula Priyudu and Endrendrum Kadhal. Her Bollywood chapter began in 1995 with Jallad opposite Mithun Chakraborty. Later she acted with Govinda Anil Kapoor and Suniel Shetty. Yet her pairing with Salman Khan stood out. Films like Judwaa and Bandhan cemented her spot in Hindi cinema. Why did Rambha step away from films? By 2010 Rambha chose to focus on family life. She married Canadian entrepreneur Indrakumar Pathmanathan and shifted to Toronto. The couple now has three children: Lavanya Sasha and Shivin. Her last big-screen role came in 2011 with The Filmstaar a Malayalam film featuring Dileep and Kalabhavan Mani. Though she left the cinema she remained connected by judging reality shows like Jodi Are U Ready Season 2. What is Rambha doing today? Beyond the arc lights Rambha has been part of her husband’s ventures. Indrakumar leads Magic Woods a Canada-based furniture and interiors brand with business ties stretching back to Chennai. Interestingly one of the ventures even carries Rambha’s name. According to producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu the couple’s combined wealth is valued at nearly Rs 2000 crore. For many fans Rambha remains a symbol of 90s glamour an actress who danced to chartbusters balanced multiple film industries and stood tall among superstars. Though she now lives far from the spotlight her legacy continues every time a song or a scene from that golden era replays on screen.
