Dorabji Tata’s name is written in golden letters in India’s industrial history. He was born on August 27 1859 and played a crucial role in turning his father Jamsetji Tata’s visionary ideas into reality. After completing his early education in Mumbai he went to England for higher studies and later graduated from St. Xavier’s College Mumbai. He worked as a journalist with the Bombay Gazette. He was sent to Pondicherry to set up a textile project. Founding Tata Steel And Tata Power In 1907 Dorabji Tata established the Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) in Jamshedpur. Around the same time he also laid the foundation of a power plant near Mumbai. Despite British colonial rule he dedicated his life to giving India a strong industrial base. During World War I the supply of steel from England slowed down while demand in India soared. Dorabji planned a fivefold expansion of TISCO and began implementing it. However a sudden fall in steel prices created a severe financial crunch making it difficult to pay workers. To keep the company running he mortgaged his entire personal wealth including his wife’s jewelry and secured a loan of about Rs 1 crore. Dorabji Tata Marriage and Family While on a business trip to Mysore State Jamsetji Tata met Dr. Hormusji Bhabha the state’s first Indian Inspector General of Education. Dorabji later visited the Bhabha family and won their approval. In 1897 he married Dr. Bhabha’s only daughter Meherbai. The couple had no children. During his time in England Dorabji learnt horse riding cricket and tennis. He also encouraged Indian athletes. In fact he financed India’s very first participation in the 1920 Antwerp Olympics entirely from his own pocket. He also supported the Indian contingent in the 1924 Paris Olympics and became a member of the International Olympic Committee.
