Geologists in Italy have issued a warning to tourists flocking to Sicily to see the latest eruption of Mount Etna. The volcano began to spew out large plumes of ash and smoke already back in June and has remained active throughout the summer.

Now some spectacular lava flows have begun to make their way down the steep sides of the mountain, attracting volcano enthusiasts from around the world. The volcano's current activity has been described as "within normal limits" by experts and nothing to be too alarmed about. However, as ever with eruptions, the situation can change rapidly and the public and tourists must remain alert at all times.

This was the timely message delivered by Salvo Cocina during the Etna Forum in Ragalna, where volcano aficionados are gathering to discuss the latest exciting developments.

The head of Sicily's Regional Civil Protection Department told those present: "This is a phenomenon that falls within the volcano's physiology. But we must remain extremely cautious because everything can change rapidly."

Photos and videos of the erupting volcano show specular images of rivers of hot molten lava cascading down the mountain.

There was palpable excitement at the forum, which attracted a host of dignitaries from Sicily's political and scientific establishment.

Both the mayor of Ragalna - Nino Caruso - and his deputy - Emanuele Motta - attended the opening. Dr. Giovanni Riggio, Extraordinary Commissioner of the Etna Park, was also scheduled to give a brief talk to attendees.

Minister of Tourism Daniela Santanchè was also present and clearly thrilled by the spectacular scenes provided by the majestic volcano.

She told the newspaper La Sicilia: "When you travel the world, they even make you pay to see fake volcanoes.

"Here, there's the real one: Etna, which was thrilling to hear roaring today. It was almost a tribute, because for someone like me who isn't used to it, it's beautiful music.

"We need to relaunch Etna, our identity, which is an absolutely important volcano, but I'm also thinking of food and wine tourism ."
