Today’s youth is thinking very differently about relationships (live in relationship). While earlier the next stop of love was considered marriage, now the new generation is trying to live relationships in its own way. We know this system of living without marriage as a live-in relationship. This concept, which came from western countries, is now building a house fast in the cities of India. The biggest attraction of live-in relationship is its freedom. The youth believe that it is important to understand a partner well before getting married like marriage. By being together, the habits, nature, anger and thinking of the partner can be seen closely. This experience is helpful in deciding the stability of the relationship later.
In addition, individual space is more in such relationships. Couples are also financially independent and share domestic responsibilities. At the same time, if the relationship is not successful, then it can be easily separated by avoiding long legal processes like divorce.
Advantage
- Chance to know each other
- economic freedom
- Emotional proximity
- Divorce
Loss
Like every relationship, live-in is not untouched by challenges. The biggest issue is the lack of commitment. Like marriage, it has no legal or social bond, which can move the foundation of trust. Mental and emotional stress deepens when the relationship breaks down.
Apart from this, the attitude of Indian society is also a major hindrance. Where marriage is considered to be a symbol of sacred bondage and union of families, many still find it wrong to live together without marriage. In small cities and villages it is called rebellion or rudeness. This is the reason why live-in couples often have to face social stigma and criticism.
Legal security is also limited. In cases like property and heritage, the live-in partner does not get the same strength as married couples. The most complicated question is of children. Indian law and society have not been able to completely clarify the situation of children born in this system.
Society thinking
Even today, marriage in India is considered to be an alliance of not only two people but two families. This is the reason why society looks divided into two parts regarding live-in. In metros, youth adopt it rapidly, while people in towns and rural areas see it as a social crime. Changes are happening gradually, but protest and hesitation is still deep.
Learn law
Live-in relationship is not illegal in India. The Supreme Court has also recognized to live together with the consent of two adults. Not only this, live-in partners can also get security and rights under domestic violence law.
