A cancer specialist is encouraging men not to dismiss health concerns, which include small signals you may overlook, as prompt action could save your life.
Most people experience aches and pains as they age, which, most of the time, may not be alarming; however, a few symptoms may indicate something more severe. Oncologists say that, as men usually do not seek medical assistance in the early stages, a few devastating conditions, like cancer, are often discovered when it is too late. And so, UK-based Dr Jiri Kubes, a radiation oncologist, has put out a few important warning signs men should always monitor. Back pain While most of the time, back pain is understood to be a consequence of ageing, experts believe most signs are overlooked. "Back pain is usually musculoskeletal, but persistent or deep pain in the lower back or hips requires attention," said Dr Kubes. Back pain that could be a sign of cancer usually occurs along with other cancer symptoms, and a few examples of these symptoms include:
  • Back pain that does not seem to be related to movement or does not get worse with movement.
  • Back pain that usually occurs at night or early in the morning and goes away or gets better during the day.
  • Back pain that persists even after physical therapy or other treatments.
  • Changes in your bowel habits, such as blood in your urine or stool.
  • Sudden and unexplained weight loss.
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Weakness, tingling, or numbness in your arms or legs.
Exhaustion Feeling exhausted or fatigued once in a while can be normal, but in the long run, it can be linked to many serious illnesses. "Ongoing fatigue, even after proper rest, could be a subtle sign of many underlying conditions, including cancer, especially if it is accompanying other symptoms," said Dr Kubes. Experts believe cancer causes this "nutrient theft", where cancer cells use your body's energy and nutrients to grow. Dr Kubes said if fatigue becomes severe and affects your daily life or is accompanied by other signs like unexplained weight loss, fevers, and persistent pain, you must get yourself tested as soon as possible. Unexpected weight loss Who doesn't like to lose weight? But if it has been happening without making any efforts, contact your doctor right away. "It could be down to a number of different reasons, for example, stress, but it could also be linked to serious illnesses such as cancer," said Dr Kubes. Doctors say it can happen when cancer cells use up a lot of your body's energy, particularly associated with cancers of the pancreas, stomach, esophagus, and lungs. However, it is also important to remember that unexplained weight loss can have other causes as well. Persistent throat pain Even though it may simply be due to a sore throat, a lingering, painful throat could indicate something more concerning. "Having a sore throat for longer than three weeks is worthy of a call to your GP," Dr Kubes said. Dr Kubes said if pain in your throat is accompanied by hoarseness or difficulty swallowing, then it could be an early sign of throat cancer. Other symptoms to watch for include voice changes (like hoarseness), ear pain, a lump in the neck, chronic cough, or unexplained weight loss.
