Mumbai: Durga Puja is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals, dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. Also known as Durgotsav, it is observed during Sharadiya Navratri and marks five days of grand festivities, rituals, and devotion. Across Bengal, Odisha, Assam and eastern India, the festival is not only a religious occasion but also a cultural extravaganza featuring pandals, artistic idols, music, dance, and community gatherings.
In 2025, Durga Puja will hold added significance as Sharadiya Navratri spans 10 days instead of the usual nine. Devotees believe that Goddess Durga’s arrival and departure during this period symbolise future fortunes, with her entry and exit days considered highly auspicious for predicting prosperity or challenges ahead.
When does Durga Puja 2025 begin?
Durga Puja 2025 will coincide with Sharadiya Navratri, which begins on 22 September 2025 (Monday) and continues until 1 October 2025 (Wednesday). This year’s Navratri will extend for 10 days, as the Tritiya Tithi falls across two days.
The grand celebrations of Durga Puja, however, formally commence on 28 September 2025 (Sunday), the day of Shashthi Tithi. On this day, Maa Katyayani is worshipped, idols are installed in pandals, and the Bilva Nimantran rituals are performed. The auspicious time for idol installation will last from 6:08 am to 10:30 am.
