The apex court made this comment during the hearing on the petition in which the question has been raised whether the age of consent under the Conservation of Sexual Offenses (Paxo) Act should be reduced from 18 years to 16 years.

The bench said, "When the cases are of real love, they like each other and want to get married .. Do not behave criminal cases in such cases. You have to keep in mind the reality of society. ''

The apex court referred to the trauma to the couples that usually seem to send a male partner to jail after the girl's parents register a case under the Poxo Act. This is the harsh truth of society.

He said that another bench of the apex court is considering a similar issue related to the age of consent. He would put some orders of the apex court on record in the context of the demands made in the petition, after which the bench adjourned the hearing of the case for 26 August.
