Another service by homegrown software firm Zoho has gained traction online, after messaging app Arattai went viral in the past few weeks. Union home minister Amit Shah switched to Zoho Mail, fuelling conversation on social media about digital sovereignty and the adoption of homegrown technology solutions.
The centre is aiming to cut reliance on global tech giants, keep data within the country, and ensure better privacy for citizens. Shah’s move shows the government is putting its weight behind homespun services to achieve the same.
"I have switched to Zoho Mail. Kindly note the change in my email address. My new email address is amitshah.bjp @ http://zohomail.in. For future correspondence via mail, kindly use this address," Shah said in a post on X.
This comes on the heels of similar moves by others, such as IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who in September announced he was switching to Zoho's office software suite. In a post on social media platform X, Vaishnaw said he will be using Chennai-based Zoho's online office platform for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations from now.
This will most likely have a domino effect among other government leaders.
The push for Indian digital solutions has been the wind in Zoho's wings, which has seen a dramatic uptick in interest and registrations, especially among government departments and public sector organisations after ministerial endorsements. Zoho founder and CEO Sridhar Vembu welcomed Shah’s move on X, dedicating the moment to the company’s Indian engineering teams.
Arattai's success
The Chennai-based company's instant messaging app Arattai found success very late in its lifecycle, with hundreds of thousands of Indians joining after ministers endorsed it.
Arattai touched 7.5 million downloads early October across Google Play Store and Apple's App Store. Vembu in a post on X on Sunday, detailed the homegrown engineering frameworks that run Arattai. In the post, Vembu said he has advised his team to resolutely stay the course, and not allow praise, criticism, or fame to distract.
The app, unprepared for its sudden popularity, is now advancing many feature releases to retain users, like end-to-end encryption.
