Indonesia’s Bali has lost its title as Asia’s most beautiful island to Vietnam’s Phu Quoc this year, as voted by readers of American magazine Condé Nast Traveler.

Bali scored 89.84 points out of 100, putting it at 6th this year after Phu Quoc, Malaysia’s Langkawi, Thailand’s Koh Samui, Boracay and Palawan of the Philippines, according to the magazine’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

With a blend of Hindu-Balinese traditions, Bali has long been renowned for its rich cultural heritage, including intricate dances, captivating rituals, and ancient temples.

However, many foreigners have deemed it one of most overrated destinations due to pollution and overcrowding.

Authorities in Bali recently introduced new guidelines for foreign tourists to curb misbehaviors and improve its tourism image amid travel boom.

Tourists are also prohibited from littering or polluting Bali’s environment and throwing waste in lakes and rivers.

Bali received more than four million foreign tourists from January to July this year, up from 3.89 million in the same period last year.

More than 757,000 Condé Nast Traveler readers participated in the survey, sharing their opinions on various travel experiences, including cities, islands, hotels, resorts, cruise ships, spas, and airlines.

The Readers’ Choice Awards, the longest-running accolade in the travel industry, celebrate excellence in hotels, resorts, and destinations around the world.
