During the last few years, a large number of camps, home stays, resorts and hotels have been constructed illegally on the banks of rivers in Uttarakhand. Such illegal constructions also pose a threat to the environment of the state. The state government has now decided to take strict action against such illegal constructions.

Action against resorts and hotels built on the banks of rivers and drains

Dehradun DM Savin Bansal has shown strictness against illegally constructed commercial structures on the banks of rivers and drains. He has ordered that a high-level investigation should be conducted into the hotels and resorts built illegally at tourist places like Sahasradhara, Maldevata, Shikhar Falls, Guchupani and Kimadi. Along with this, the DM has also ordered to immediately close those websites which book customers for these hotels and resorts.

Major loss of life and property due to natural disaster

Efforts to divert the flow of rivers, illegal construction of hotels etc. in the submerged areas of the river, illegal mining, etc., are causing the deterioration of the natural balance of this entire area. This is the reason that in the last few years, the risk of natural disasters like excessive rainfall and cloud bursts in these areas and surrounding areas of Uttarakhand has increased much more than before. During the last few years, there has been a significant increase in the incidents of cloud bursts and mountain cracking in Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pauri Garhwal, etc. In such incidents, many people lose their lives and property worth lakhs and crores of rupees is also lost.

Reason for Uttarakhand government’s strictness against illegal construction

Due to illegal construction, the natural flow of the river is disrupted. As long as there is less water in the river, the situation remains under control, but when there is excessive rainfall, the velocity of the river increases and the structures in the submerged area are unable to tolerate the high velocity of the river and collapse. This not only causes economic loss running into lakhs of crores of rupees, many people also lose their lives. This is the reason why the Uttarakhand government is very strict against illegal construction on the banks of rivers and streams.
