Al Udeid Air Base (Qatar). US President Donald Trump will meet with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani before leaving for a trip to Asia. The meeting will take place during the refueling of his plane Air Force One at Qatar’s Al Udeid Air Base, where the US military’s regional headquarters is located and thousands of American troops are deployed.
According to White House officials, the meeting is part of diplomatic efforts to preserve the fragile peace agreement in Gaza. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who recently returned from a trip to Israel, will also attend the meeting.
Qatar has been playing an important mediator role in indirect talks between Israel and Hamas since the Gaza conflict. It is one of the main countries maintaining the ceasefire in Gaza, along with Egypt, the US and Türkiye.
This week, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim also met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, discussing sensitive issues such as the possible establishment of security forces in Gaza and the future of Hamas.
Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani has been playing an active role in peace talks since the Hamas attack on 07 October 2023.
This will be President Trump’s first visit to Asia after taking office again in January, in which he is expected to meet several Asian leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, and attend two major regional conferences.
