A name that once ruled the screens in the 80s and 90s is known for her grace and powerful performances. She made her mark through films like Saaransh Mandi Trikal and Khamosh. Though she later stepped away from the limelight Razdan remains admired for her versatility. Born on October 25 in Birmingham England she turned 69 this year. Her father was a Kashmiri Pandit while her mother had British-German roots a blend that shaped her unique worldview. Yes we are talking about none other than Soni Razdan. Soni Razdans journey: From theatre to big screen  Soni’s love for acting began early. She first performed in English theatre and later made her debut in John Fowles’ The Collector. Although the film didn’t perform well it opened doors for her. She went on to star in 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981) a film that depicted the struggles of Anglo-Indians in post-colonial India. The same year she entered Bollywood with Ahista Ahista playing the character of Deepa. Her natural acting and quiet strength made her stand out. How Soni Razdans marriage changed her career? Razdan has often spoken about how her professional life changed after she married filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. At the time Bhatt was already married and Soni converted to Islam before tying the knot. After marriage her career took a sharp dip. In one of her interviews Soni candidly revealed that “before marriage everything was going great. But after marriage work stopped coming my way. People in the industry started assuming that I didn’t need to work anymore.” She said that back then society viewed married actresses differently. “There was this unspoken rule: once married you’re done. You’ve achieved your purpose” she recalled. Soni Razdans comeback and reinvention Despite the setbacks Soni didn’t give up. She moved to television where she found success in the popular show Buniyaad. Later she returned to films and made her mark in Monsoon Wedding (2001) Raazi (2018) and War (2019). In Raazi she shared the screen with her daughter Alia Bhatt creating a memorable mother-daughter moment on screen. Apart from acting Razdan also explored direction and writing. She directed the film Girvii featuring Renuka Shahane Kanchan Rawal Kunal Khemu and Avtar Gill in lead roles. Even at 69 Soni Razdan continues to explore new creative avenues. She is now set to appear in the Amazon series Song of Paradise. With her decades-long journey through cinema television and now OTT Razdan proves that passion never fades with time.
