There's some relief for Delhi residents. The Delhi Jal Board's (DJB) Late Payment Surcharge (LPSC) waiver scheme is showing promise. So far, more than 20,980 consumers, or approximately 21,000, have benefited from the scheme, resulting in a waiver of approximately ₹96.30 crore in late payment surcharges. This scheme has not only reduced the financial burden on people but also accelerated the Jal Board's recovery efforts.
₹32.79 crore successfully recovered so far
According to the Delhi Jal Board, ₹32.79 crore has been recovered since the scheme was implemented, meaning a significant number of people are paying their past dues. Officials say that recovery is expected to accelerate further in the next billing cycle after the revised bills are issued.
Relief expected for 1.5 million accounts
Out of the Delhi Jal Board's total 2.9 million consumers, approximately 1.5 million have outstanding dues. These accounts have outstanding dues of approximately ₹11,000 crore. This scheme will provide relief to these consumers as they will now only have to pay the principal amount, while the late payment surcharge has been completely waived.
Awareness Campaign and Local Support
The DJB has launched a city-wide awareness campaign to connect as many people as possible with the scheme. Continuous publicity is being carried out through buses, metro, radio, newspapers, and digital platforms. Additionally, the Board is working with RWAs and local communities to disseminate information about the scheme to consumers so that more people can benefit from it. Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma stated that this scheme is not just a financial recovery effort, but an important step towards a clean Yamuna and a sustainable water system.
Preparation of an Incentive Scheme
The Delhi Jal Board is also considering a performance-based incentive scheme for its meter readers and billing staff to make the recovery process more effective.
