Guwahati: Leaders of different parties of the Northeast India, including Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad Sangma announced that they would form a single political entity to raise issues of the region.

Tipra Motha Party (TMP), led by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, Daniel Langthasa from People’s Party, Assam, and BJP spokesperson Mmhonlumo Kikon were among the signatories of a joint statement that announced the decision. Both TMP and NPP are part of NDA.

“We, leaders from different states of the Northeast, have come together to make a collective and historic announcement, the coming together of various voices of our region to form a united singular political entity that truly represents the aspirations of our people,” the statement read.

A committee has been formed to deliberate on the future course of action, including the modalities and structure of the proposed political entity, it said.

The committee, with NPP president James Sangma as convenor, will work over the next 45 days to finalise the structure of the unified entity. It will engage in talks with other parties.

Zoram People’s Movement, which is ruling Mizoram, Nagaland’s Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, and Asom Gana Parishad, the BJP’s junior partner in Assam, are not part of the proposed entity.

Conrad told media persons in New Delhi, “For long, we have spoken about the same issues but from different platforms and political spaces. Our strength lies in unity, and it is time to give our people one collective voice”.

Sangma added, “Taking inspiration from our forefathers, we have resolved to carry forward their ideals. Today’s announcement marks the first step towards this. People of the Northeast deserve to be heard at the national level.”

Sangma said, “The protection of the land rights of indigenous people is a primary concern”. The parties are going to merge and become a single political entity.”

Pradyot Manikya said the single entity will act as a collective voice for the people of the region. “Before, we spoke as individuals or one political party. But now, we need to speak in one voice. If we do this, then perhaps, people will take us and our issues seriously. We have come together for our people. Many thought this was impossible, but it has happened today. We have to shed our personal egos and unite in the interest of our people.”

After winning the Assam election in 2016, BJP formed an anti-Congress alliance of regional parties –– Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA).

The Congress party has Northeast Congress Coordination Committee (NECCC), which is a platform of Congress leaders of seven states of the region.
