Delhi: Pakistan’s wicketkeeper batsman Azam Khan has compared former captain and veteran cricketer Babar Azam with India’s great batsman Virat Kohli.
Babar gave a new identity to Pakistan cricket
During a conversation on a podcast show Cricwick, Azam Khan said that just as Virat Kohli took Indian cricket to new heights, Babar Azam has worked to change the image of Pakistan cricket.
Azam said, “Pakistan cricket was earlier famous for its fast bowling, but Babar Azam gave it recognition on the strength of batting. This is a huge change, just like Virat Kohli did for India, Babar did for Pakistan.”
“Kohli had legends, Babar had none.”
Azam Khan compared the circumstances of both the batsmen and said, “When Virat Kohli started his career, he had great players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni. That was a golden era, where Kohli had many great players to learn from, but there was no such big name with Babar Azam. He single-handedly carried the burden of Pakistan’s batting.”
“Pakistani fans do not understand Babar’s contribution”
When Azam Khan was asked whether Pakistan fans truly understand Babar’s contribution, he clearly said, “No, they do not.” He further said that the people of Pakistan do not properly assess Babar’s consistency and ability to play under pressure.
