Chandigarh, Nov 7: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated an inquiry into the death of Aqil Akhtar, the son of former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa and his wife, former legislator Razia Sultana. The incident occurred under suspicious circumstances in Panchkula, Haryana, on October 16.
The FIR filed by the CBI also implicates Aqil's wife and sister, citing charges of murder and criminal conspiracy. The family, however, contends that Aqil succumbed to a drug overdose.
The investigation was prompted by a complaint from their neighbor, Shamshuddin Chaudhary, who alleged foul play, leading to the registration of a murder case.
Initially, the Haryana Police opened the case based on Chaudhary's complaint from Malerkotla town in Punjab, which was subsequently transferred to the CBI following a recommendation from the state government.
Chaudhary referenced a video posted by Aqil on August 27, where he expressed concerns about strained family relations and his safety.
In the 16-minute video, Aqil detailed significant family discord and claimed his life was at risk. He accused his mother and sister of conspiring against him, stating that they intended to either harm him or frame him for a crime.
Aqil also recounted experiences of being forcibly confined, sent to a rehabilitation center, and stripped of his business earnings, declaring, 'They have taken everything from me.'
A CBI spokesperson confirmed that the FIR was filed against the four individuals under Sections 103 (1) and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The FIR was registered based on allegations surrounding Aqil Akhtar's unnatural death, with the CBI noting ongoing tensions between him and his family.
The agency has commenced the collection of digital and forensic evidence and plans to interrogate those named in the FIR. They are also investigating the events leading up to Aqil's death, particularly the internal family disputes highlighted in the complaint.
