According to the Indian Express report, The world’s largest cricket venue, Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabadhas been officially shortlisted to host the opening match and grand final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, as it did during the ODI World Cup 2023. Securing their place in the knockout stage, Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium is scheduled to host one of the two semi-finals, which promises to be a high voltage clash at the historic ground. However, the decision on the final allocation of the semi-finals depends on the unique geopolitical agreement between Pakistan and the co-organizing nation.

The report further states that The existing agreement between the BCCI and the PCB stipulates that if India and Pakistan meet in the semi-finals, that match will be played at a neutral venue, exclusively R Premadasa Stadium, Colombowill be shifted to Sri Lanka, while Wankhede will host the other semi-final. Additionally, the second leading contender for the semi-final slot Eden Gardens of Kolkata which is also in strong contention to host the semi-finals if Colombo’s position is not activated. The entire process of deciding the final knockout slots is designed to provide high quality cricket, while managing the sensitive need for neutral grounds for some international matches.

ICC T20 World Cup 2026: Contingency plans and cross-border agreements

The schedule of knockout matches is defined by flexibility according to the conditions, carefully planned in such a way that all commitments of the co-organizers and the participating countries are respected, even when the circumstances are unusual.
