That is why a research has been done on this matter in Australia. A DustSafe program was organized here at Macquarie University, in which people from more than 35 countries participated.
What was revealed in the research?
People from all over the world gathered in Australia believe that there is no place where dust is not present. It accumulates on all surfaces in the natural environment and also inside homes. Here we spend most of our time. This is not a thing of today, this has been happening even before Covid. Some dust is natural, coming from rocks, soil and even space.
Where does dust come from in the house?
One-third of the dust accumulated in the house originates from indoor sources only. Some studies have revealed that about 20 to 50 percent of the dust found in the house is made up of dead skin cells of our body. Apart from this, skin cells and hair of pets are also part of the dust. In a closed house, dust comes from the upper part of the house and windows and doors.

Where did the dust come from in the house?
While the rest comes from outside through air, clothing, pets, shoes etc. Even though it may not be visible to you, when you come in from outside, some dust particles also come with you. Two-thirds of the dust that accumulates at home reaches our home from outside. Cooking, open fireplaces and indoor smoking cause the accumulation of very fine dust as well as harmful pollutants in your home, which are harmful to health.

What are the problems caused by dust present in the house?
Due to dust present in the house, you may suffer from sneezing, blocked nose, runny or itchy nose, post-nasal drip, cough, wheezing and shortness of breath. In many cases you can also become a victim of asthma. Research has revealed that due to the dust present in the house, you can become a victim of many serious diseases including cancer and reproductive system.

How to prevent dust from entering the house?
- Use door mats and take off your shoes inside the house.
- Children or pets soiled with mud should be wiped with a towel at the door and removed and washed as soon as they enter.
- Choose wisely what chemicals we allow into our homes and how we use them. Generally, every item used contains some or the other chemical. These have to be used carefully.
- Minimize use of antibacterial products at home.
- Using a vacuum cleaner will help a lot.
- Always use a wet cloth to clean dust.
