A charming and historic market town can make for the perfect weekend escape during the cold winter months. While most towns up and down the UK are at their busiest in the summer, some locations hold extra appeal when the days become shorter and the weather gets chillier.

It's fair to say that Holt, in Norfolk, is one of those towns. Located around 23 miles north of Norwich and just two miles from the coast, Holt's Georgian streets are lit up by twinkling lights throughout the winter. The town is littered with thriving independent shops, art galleries and antique stores. There is also a host of cosy and welcoming cafes, pubs and restaurants for visitors to enjoy.

The first thing that strikes visitors when they arrive in Holt is the attractive Georgian architecture and traditional flint buildings. One of the most notable landmarks in the town is the 13th century St Andrew's Church.

Holt also boasts a vibrant high street which homes a number of successful independent businesses. Browse Bakers and Lamers, a family-operated department store dating back to 1770, is arguably the most iconic in the town.

Holt Bookshop is also popular among visitors for its cosy and intimate atmosphere. Meanwhile, people can discover handmade pottery at Folly Tearooms or take a peaceful stroll on the trails in Holt Country Park.

The Holt Sunday Market takes place on the first Sunday of every month from April to December. It champions local independent traders, including craftspeople, designers, makers, food producers and street food vendors.

The market has won awards throughout the years and often welcomes around 75 traders. However, it can get busy so visitors are advised to pre-book a parking space.

The town also benefits from being just a 10 minute drive to the stunning Norfolk coastline. It offers sweeping sandy beaches and stunning panoramic views looking out to sea.

The closest seaside towns to Holt are Cromer and Sheringham. They offer alternative places to visit for those staying in the area for a long weekend.

A number of TripAdvisor users have also recommended Holt as a place to visit. They agree that there are a good selection of shops in the town.

EESW1 said: "Holt is a delightful small town, and would certainlyy meet all your criteria. It is one of the best surviving Georgian towns in Norfolk, it is also the main shopping centre in North Norfolk with over 200 shops, many independently owned."

David J wrote: "Holt is a smart small town with a good selection of shops and restaurants. We spent a week there a few years ago with a group of friends and would happily return."

On the market, Steve C put: "A really nice market in a beautiful market town, well worth a visit. I would also recommend Byfords for food."
