Daily brushing is very important for the cleanliness and health of teeth. However, experts say that not paying attention to the amount of toothpaste while brushing can damage the tooth enamel. Many people use toothpaste in large quantities thinking that it will make their teeth whiter and cleaner, but this notion is not at all correct.
Why is it important to protect tooth enamel?
The enamel is the outermost and hardest part of the tooth. It works to provide protection, strength and sensitivity to the teeth. If the enamel becomes weak, the teeth start getting damaged quickly, become sensitive and the risk of getting infected increases.
A correct brushing rule
Dental experts believe that the amount of toothpaste should be determined according to the size of the hair.
For children: A pea-sized amount is sufficient.
For adults: A strip of approximately 1-1.5 cm is considered sufficient.
Excessive use of toothpaste not only wears down the enamel but can also irritate and increase sensitivity of the gums.
Disadvantages of excess toothpaste
Wearing away of enamel: Fast brushing and excessive toothpaste weakens the enamel.
Increased sensitivity: Teeth start hurting when eating hot and cold things.
Gum irritation: Excessive use of fluoride and other chemicals can cause the gums to swell.
Digestive problems: Accidentally swallowing too much toothpaste may cause stomach discomfort.
correct brushing technique
Press the brush lightly and move it in a circular motion, do not rub forcefully.
Brush twice every day, in the morning and at night.
Selecting the right toothpaste along with the brush is also important – toothpaste with less fluoride is better for sensitive teeth.
After brushing, clean your mouth thoroughly with water, so that the chemicals do not remain on the teeth for long.
Expert advice
Dental professionals say that only balanced quantity and correct technique can keep teeth healthy for a long time. Applying too much toothpaste not only does not improve cleanliness but can also weaken the teeth.
