The Yadav family, one of the most powerful political families of Bihar, is facing rift and cracks are wide out in the open
Lalu Prasad Yadav's family has been a long dominant force in the politics of Bihar. The family of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has for the longest time been at the centre of the state's politics. But after RJD's poll debacle in Bihar assembly elections, the family is facing internal fractures.

In the recently-concluded 2025 Bihar assembly election, RJD won just 25 of the 145 odd seats it contested. In the 2020 state elections, RJD bagged 75 seats. The day after the party's poor performance, Lalu’s daughter Rohini Acharya announced that she was “quitting” politics and severing ties with her family. Rohini blamed her brother Tejashwi Yadav and his aides, Sanjay Yadav and Rameez Nemat Khan, alleging she faced abuse and mistreatment at the family’s Patna residence.

Lalu Yadav's family dispute

Tensions within the Yadav family had been quietly building as Tejashwi Yadav consolidated power in the RJD, increasingly relying on a close circle of advisers—a move some siblings viewed as exclusionary. The party’s poor performance in the recent Bihar assembly elections, winning just 25 of 143 contested seats, intensified scrutiny of his leadership.

The situation escalated this week when Rohini Acharya publicly alleged mistreatment at the family home and claimed she was unfairly targeted by Tejashwi’s aides. Following her remarks, three of her sisters—Ragini, Chanda, and Raj Lakshmi also left their parents’ Patna residence, highlighting a growing family rift.

Tej Pratap Yadav, who had previously fallen out with the party and was disowned by Lalu last year, voiced strong support for Rohini, calling her treatment unacceptable. The reaction underscored the emotional and political complexity of the family dynamics.

Meanwhile, the RJD’s top leadership, including Lalu and Tejashwi, has remained silent. Party insiders say concerns over decision-making and the influence of Tejashwi’s advisers have been simmering for months and are now surfacing after the electoral setback. Amid the uncertainty, JD(U) leaders have urged Lalu to intervene, warning that the family discord could have wider implications for Bihar’s political landscape.
