Aadhaar Updates: With an aim to prevent misuse of Aadhaar data and to discourage offline verification the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is considering issuing an Aadhaar card that contains only the holder’s photograph and a QR code. According to the reports this proposal will be presented before the Aadhaar Authority on December 1. The Authoritys CEO Bhawnesh Kumar during an open online conference held for a new Aadhaar-related app said that a new rule is being considered for December aimed at discouraging offline verification by institutions such as hotels event organizers etc. improving the age-verification process and ensuring the privacy of Aadhaar holders. Kumar said One idea is: why should there be any details on the card at all? It should contain only the photo and the QR code. If we keep providing printed information people will continue to rely on it. Those who know how to misuse it will keep doing so. It is important to note that the Aadhaar Act prohibits the collection use or storage of a person’s Aadhaar number or biometric information for any kind of offline verification. Despite this many institutions continue to take photocopies of Aadhaar cards and store them.
