Test matches are often stopped due to rain or bad light, but a rare and alarming incident took place during the Bangladesh vs Ireland Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. A 5.5-magnitude earthquake shook parts of Bangladesh on Friday morning, forcing an unexpected halt to play.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor struck at 10:08 a.m., with its epicenter located near Narsingdi. At the time, the first session was underway and Ireland had reached 165 for 5 after 55 overs in their second innings. As soon as the ground began to shake, players immediately stopped play and sat down on the field for safety. Cricketers inside the dressing room also rushed downstairs as a precaution. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Cricket Ireland posted on X (Twitter), “Wow! A minor tremor/earthquake has halted play.” The quake lasted roughly 30 seconds, after which the match resumed shortly. This isn’t the first time cricket has been disrupted by seismic activity—an Under-19 match between Zimbabwe and Ireland was similarly paused in 2022 due to an earthquake.
Bangladesh in control
Bangladesh remains firmly on top in the ongoing Test. After posting a massive 476 in their first innings, the hosts bowled Ireland out for just 175. Having already won the first Test by an innings and 47 runs, Bangladesh appears comfortably placed to take the series.
