Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to build ‘Babri Masjid’ with public money, but Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel did not allow his plan to succeed. Singh also claimed that Nehru had suggested that the money collected by the common people for the construction of Patel’s memorial after his death should be used for the construction of wells and roads.
Addressing a gathering at Sadhli village near Vadodara as part of the ‘Unity March’ organized to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, Singh described Patel as a true liberal and secular man who never believed in appeasement.
Singh said, ‘Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to build Babri Masjid (in Ayodhya) with public money. If anyone opposed this proposal, it was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He did not allow Babri Masjid to be constructed with public money.

He said that when Nehru raised the issue of restoration of the Somnath temple in Gujarat, Patel clarified that the temple was a different matter, as the Rs 30 lakh required for its restoration was donated by the common people.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Singh said, ‘A trust was formed and not a single penny of the government was spent on this (Somnath temple) work. Similarly, the government did not give a single rupee for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya. The entire expense was borne by the people of the country. This is called real secularism.
Singh said that Sardar Patel could have become Prime Minister, but he never aspired to any post in his entire career. The Defense Minister said that despite ideological differences with Nehru, he worked with him because he had given a word to Mahatma Gandhi. He claimed that Nehru became President of the Congress in 1946 because Patel had withdrawn his nomination on Gandhi’s advice.

Singh said, ‘Congress President was to be elected in 1946. Most of the members of the Congress Committee proposed the name of Vallabhbhai Patel. When Gandhiji requested Patel to allow Nehru to become President and withdraw his nomination, Patel immediately withdrew his name.’
Without naming anyone, Singh said that some political forces wanted to erase Patel’s legacy. He said, ‘The important role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi re-established Patel as a shining star in the pages of history.’ Singh claimed that ‘some people’ tried to hide and erase Patel’s legacy, but they will not succeed as long as the BJP is in power.
He said, ‘After Patel’s demise, common people collected money for the construction of his memorial, but when this information reached Nehru ji, he said that Sardar Patel was the leader of farmers, hence this money should be spent on building wells and roads in the village.’ He said, ‘What a hypocrisy. It is the responsibility of the government to build wells and roads. The suggestion of using the memorial fund for this was absurd.
He said this shows that the government of that time wanted to hide and suppress Patel’s great legacy at all costs.
Singh said, ‘Nehruji awarded Bharat Ratna to himself, but why was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel not awarded Bharat Ratna at that time? Prime Minister Narendra Modiji decided to give due respect to Sardar Patel by building the Statue of Unity. This is really a commendable work of our Prime Minister.
Singh also rejected the argument that Patel was too old to become Prime Minister. Singh said, ‘This is completely wrong. Morarji Desai was more than 80 years old. If he could become the Prime Minister of India, then why couldn’t Sardar Patel, who was less than 80 years old, become the Prime Minister?’

Referring to the Kashmir issue, Singh said that if the suggestions raised by Patel had been accepted at the time of Kashmir’s merger, India would not have had to grapple with the Kashmir problem for a long time. He said that Patel always believed in solving problems through dialogue.
However, when all avenues were closed, he did not hesitate in adopting a tough stance, Singh said. When the need arose for the merger of Hyderabad, Patel adopted the same stance. If he had not adopted a tough stance, perhaps Hyderabad would not have become a part of India. He said this while citing Patel’s tenure as the first Home Minister of India.
Singh said that the Modi government has also upheld this value through Operation Sindoor. He said that through Operation Sindoor, India showed the world that it is capable of giving a befitting reply to those who do not understand the language of peace and harmony. He said that Operation Sindoor has become a topic of discussion not only on Indian soil but also in other countries of the world.
He said, ‘We have given a clear message that India is a peace-loving country. India does not provoke anyone but if someone provokes us, India will not spare him. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, Sardar Patel’s vision of ‘One India, Best India’ has been further strengthened. Singh said removing most of the provisions of Article 370 was no small achievement and it was Prime Minister Modi who integrated Kashmir with India (by revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir).
He said, ‘Sardar Patel showed the country the way forward by converting that weakness into strength, for which the world used to make fun of us at that time. And following the same path, India now talks to the world on its own rules, not on the rules of others.
He also said that India is rapidly moving towards becoming the world’s largest economic and strategic power. On the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, ‘Ekta Padyatra’ organized by the Gujarat government was flagged off on November 26 from his birthplace Karamsad (Anand district) to the Statue of Unity in Narmada district. This march is to conclude on December 6 at the Statue of Unity.
